Of the Sassafras genus, there are only 3 living species; Sassafras albidum, Sassafras tzumu, and Sassafras randaiense. They are easily identified by their "thumbs" on the leaves which can have a thumb on the right side, the left side, or both sides. The leaves are used in making spice. One can also chew the twigs and/or use them like a toothbrush.[1]
